Forging a More Human Future

by John Alexandra

 Mephistopheles' Anvil:

In a world torn by social crisis, Mephistopheles’ Anvil sounds an urgent call. It challenges us to recognize that:

•  Our increasing social chaos is the result of an assault on the “ecology” of the human being, an assault that is potentially even more dangerous than that threatening the natural ecology.

• The fundamental causes of this social crisis are the two hidden tendencies of the mechanistic world-view and the technological world we have created with it. These are the tendencies to kill the natural environment and dehumanize the human environment.

• Our increasingly efficient technological and social machinery comes with a price: We, as human beings, must also be efficiently integrated into this machinery. Our human experience must be divorced from nature and then systematically mechanized and numbed.

• This is accomplished through our being lured into the seductive, dazzling world of technological (virtual) reality. In the process, we become ever more blind and impotent in the world of “real” (i.e., living and human) reality.
